Stéphanie Leysen was born and raised in Antwerp, Belgium, where she obtained a Master’s in International and European Law. After an exchange experience at the University of Westminster in London, she pursued a second LLM in Human Rights Law with International Conflict & Security at the University of Kent.

Previous working experiences include internships at Human Rights Watch in Amsterdam and Brussels, working as a legal assistant in a law firm focusing on European competition law, assisting the Belgian delegation to the UN in Geneva and working as a legal intern at the International Criminal Court in The Hague.

Her passion for human rights – of which migration and refugee issues are an important part – and international humanitarian law is what has driven Stéphanie to become a member of IWB. She wants to use her academic background in EU and migration law to contribute to the IWB for Refugees project, which she believes is an important step towards achieving a better EU asylum policy.
